Building the Infrastructure of Empowerment: My Mission to Democratize Financial Wellness

For many in the Rio Grande Valley, money is often a source of stress—something we work hard to earn and immediately send back out to cover bills. I grew up witnessing the “hustle,” but I eventually realized that working hard isn’t enough; we have to build systems.

In my work at Jovanna Wealth, I teach families to build their “financial house” using five specific stages. If you want to move from survival to stability, you must build in this order.

The Construction Order

05
Doors & Windows
Investing
04
Roof
Long-Term Savings
03
Walls
Emergency Savings
02
Floor
Protection
01
Foundation
Income
  1. Foundation (Income): Your earnings. Keep expenses lower than income to ensure you have capital to build with.
  2. Floor (Protection): Income protection. This holds everything up when life shakes the ground beneath you.
  3. Walls (Emergency Savings): Your buffer. Daily habits that protect your assets from being drained by unexpected events.
  4. Roof (Long-Term Savings): Your retirement and future plans. This covers everything inside, ensuring you are prepared for the long haul.
  5. Doors & Windows (Investing): These bring in new opportunities and growth—the final stage of the build.

The Most Important Rule: Don’t Skip the Build

Many rush to open the “doors and windows” (investing) because it feels exciting. But if you don’t have your protection (floor) and emergency savings (walls) in place, a single market shift or life emergency can compromise your entire future.

Invest only after your house is structurally sound.

Why Micro-Investing is the Gateway to Financial Wellness

Once your house is built, micro-investing is the most effective way to begin your journey as an investor. Micro-investing is the practice of investing small, incremental amounts of money—often just your “spare change”—into a diversified portfolio.

Why it is a cornerstone of Financial Wellness:

  • Overcoming the “All or Nothing” Fallacy: Financial wellness is often stalled by the belief that you need a large lump sum to start. Micro-investing breaks this barrier, allowing you to participate in the market with as little as a few dollars.
  • The Power of Automation: By automating recurring contributions and “round-ups,” you eliminate the need for willpower. When saving and investing happen in the background, you are no longer making “financial decisions”—you are living a “financial system.”
  • Building Investor Identity: Financial wellness is as much about mindset as it is about math. When you see your account grow through micro-investing, you stop seeing yourself as just a “saver” and start seeing yourself as an “investor.”

Why I Champion the Acorns Mission

I advocate for Acorns because they have successfully operationalized these principles of financial wellness at scale. My passion for their mission is rooted in how their strategy aligns with my own work in the Rio Grande Valley:

  • Behavioral Design & Simplicity: Acorns focuses on what really matters—helping users build wealth simply, for every life stage. You can watch this short video to see how they strip away the complexity of the markets.
  • A Culture of “Best Interests”: It’s not just about the app; it’s about the philosophy. Whether they are collaborating with partners like ZipRecruiter to create new career opportunities, or defining a culture of empathy and purpose as CEO Noah Kerner discusses on the Wharton Fintech Podcast, Acorns consistently looks after the best interests of the “up-and-coming.”
  • Education as a Pillar: I am a firm believer that knowledge is the true foundation of wealth. I frequently point my own clients to Acorns Learn because it provides the same kind of accessible, high-quality financial education that I strive to provide through Jovanna Wealth.
  • A Commitment to Excellence: It’s no surprise that Forbes recently listed Acorns as one of America’s Best Startup Employers. Their dedication to their team, their mission, and their users demonstrates a company that wins when their users build long-term stability.

I am committed to the mission of democratizing access to financial success. Whether it is through my work at Jovanna Wealth or my career trajectory in Financial Operations, I aim to support the infrastructure that makes this empowerment possible.

You don’t need to be wealthy to build wealth—you just need the right system. Ready to finish your build? Ensure your foundation is strong, your floor is protected, and your walls are secure. Once you’re ready, use tools like Acorns to open the doors to your future.

Let’s change the narrative together.
